End of Year Events

Boardies Day
Tomorrow the children are invited to come to school in their 'boardies' for a gold coin donation, as per the information in the newsletter.

Boat Ramp Beach Fun Day
Stay tuned for more newsletter information on our whole school end of year fun day at The Dunsborough Boat Ramp. Let's hope we have a nice sunny day for it next Friday! We are leaving school to take the bus down to Old Dunsborough at around 10am and aiming to return to school by 12:30pm.

Awards Night
Our end of year awards night and Christmas carols will be held next Wednesday at 5:30pm in the hall. There will be two special awards presented to students in each class on this evening. We encourage attendance of all students for this highlight of the year.

Sight Words/Readers
There will be no sight words or readers going home in the final week of school. Please ensure that the children have brought back their books and sight words by next Monday to allow enough time to return to the library.

Spelling
Below is a link to the phonics patterns that we have covered in the spelling groups this term. It may be a good idea to practise these focus sounds with your child over the holidays, as the children will continue with this spelling program in Year Two.

Our learning in Term Four

As you may have seen, the Year Ones have been very busy in their learning this term, I just wanted to share with you some of the amazing learning that goes on in the Year One classroom!

In English, we have loved learning about all different types of fairytales and we especially loved reading different versions of stories and explored what happened when parts of the stories we loved were changed.

The children explored stories such as The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. The children loved drawing their story map of Little Red Riding hood going to her Grandma's house and this created a wonderful prompt which helped with oral storytelling.

The children made text-to-self connections with the story of Cinderella. We imagined what it would be like to have a Fairy God mother and wrote about what we would wish for.  The children got very creative and drew their own Fairy God mother to match their writing. Their interpretations of what encompassed a Fairy God mother (and their wishes) was a great way to finish our unit.

The children were so inspired when they read these stories, that they wrote their own Fairy tale narratives. They planned, edited and illustrated their own books and absolutely loved putting a twist on some of the stories that we read and making them into their own. We would love for you to come in and read them and tell us how clever we are!

In Science we have been learning about chemical change and how materials can change when we heat and cool them. The children loved making spaghetti pictures with squishy, sticky, slimy cooked spaghetti and loved building towers with long, hard and straight uncooked spaghetti! We explored what happens when chocolate is melted (yum) and what happened when different materials like olive oil, yoghurt and water were frozen.

In Geography and Technology we were given the task of creating and designing our own classrooms. The children were given success criteria of making sure every child had somewhere to sit, having clear pathways between the furniture and having dedicated learning areas where they must clearly label the learning that occurs. They have absolutely loved this task and I can safely say, that we have some future interior designers in our midst!

In Maths we have been looking at multiplication and how numbers can be separated into groups and arrays. The children used their imagination and created their own array cities where they had to design arrays of squares which would represent the windows in their array buildings. Many of the children challenged themselves and even created arrays of 6 rows of 5. They have really enjoyed exploring the concept of multiplication through Art.

Phew! I think that is it, although

Week 7 Info

Our Silkworms
Have you seen the action going on in our silkworm tank? Our cocoons have hatched and the silkworms have re-emerged as moths! The Year Ones have been observing the silkworms mating and laying eggs. We have been learning about the lifespan of the moths and how to preserve the eggs for hatching next year. Ask your kids about what they know about these quirky creatures, they are very interesting indeed! Many thanks to Elsie and her family for donating the silkworms to the Year Ones. They have generated lots of inquiry and excitement within our classroom.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal
There is a box in the classroom for donations to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Some ideas for donations include: tins, pasta, rice, biscuits, crackers, sauces, jams, condiments, (basically any non-perishable good food, which can be used beyond Christmas). Thank you to those of you who have already contributed some generous donations to those who require our support at this special time of the year, which can be a difficult time for some families.

Think Mentals
The Think Mentals books are due in on Friday 1st December. The children should have completed Unit 24 by the end of next week. This will be the last Maths homework for the year. Thank you for working with your children to complete their Mental Maths homework this year. For those of you who may have some catching up to do, please endeavour to do what you can with your child. The remaining activities in the book may be good revision over the Christmas holidays before the children start Year 2.

Have a wonderful week!

Week 6 information

Good afternoon parents,

I can't believe it is week 6 already! Only four glorious weeks left with your beautiful children - I'm not sure if I can hold it together :(

A few messages for this week...

Chicken Pox
There has been a reported case of the chicken pox in Year One. As there has only been one isolated case reported, we can not send out an official letter to parents just yet. Please visit your local GP if you have any concerns ASAP.

Washing of tea towels
It has been a busy term and we have been using a lot of tea towels in our wet area. I was just wondering if there was any parents that wouldn't mind taking home a bag of tea towels to wash? I will have a few bags at pick up today and tomorrow if you can help out - Thank you in advance!

OLC Christmas Concert and Awards Night
The annual OLC Christmas concert will be happening on Wednesday the 6th of December. This is not compulsory to attend but I know from personal experience that the children thoroughly enjoy the night!

Boardies Day
Boardies Day for Smith's Beach surf life saving club will be happening on Friday December 1st. The children are encouraged to come in their boardies and faction shirt and bring a gold coin donation to support a great community run club.

Orientation Day for Year Two
The children will be visiting their new Year Two class on Friday 1st of December and spend an hour with their new teacher experiencing a morning in their new class. I'm sure they will be very excited to meet their new teachers!

I think that is all for now...have a lovely afternoon.

A post from Mrs. Harte

Dear Parents,

This week in Maths we have been learning all about capacity and volume.  Students started their discovery of capacity with helping Goldilocks match three different sized cups to the three bears by measuring how many pom poms could fit into each cup.  They learnt that the one with the most amount of pom poms must belong to papa bear, the one with the least amount of pom poms must belong to baby bear and therefore the middle sized one must be Mumma bears.  On Wednesday the students got some hands on experience with capacity and volume with the Capacity Capers relay game.  Students were put into teams and they had to transport 1000 millilitres of water from one tub to another using a sponge.  We measured the volume of how much water was in the 2nd bucket to see which team had the most left.  Students had a great time and sorry about the multicoloured hands.

I would also like to say that Friday will be my last day at OLC.  I have had the most amazing time and will miss seeing the children's smiling faces everyday.  I would like to say a big thank you to all the wonderful students in 1P for being so well behaved and such amazing learners and also a huge thank you to Miss Prowse for letting me take over her class and being such an exceptional teacher to learn from.  Hopefully I will see you all again soon.

A Post from Mrs. Harte

Dear Parents,

I have now been part of 1P for 2 and a half weeks now and we have been having so much fun.  I have enjoyed working with every student in the class and they all have been so well behaved and accepted me with open arms.

We have been doing some amazing learning over the past couple of weeks in 1P.  In Maths we have been learning all about Data collecting and displaying the data in different graphs, along with some pretty tasty data collection about Jelly beans.  In Science we have been learning all about Chemical science and how heat can change materials such as spaghetti.  We had a lot of fun making some pretty crazy spaghetti drawings with cooked spaghetti, which the children came up with some awesome ideas.  (Personally I think my idea of Mr Wilkie's office filled with spaghetti was pretty cool!!!)  We also got to make some spaghetti towers using uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows.  I believe the winning group made a tower that stood 49cm tall!!!

I can't wait to see what the next 2 and a half weeks has installed and the great learning and fun we are going to have.  Thank you for a great first couple of weeks.
