Man made or Natural materials?

This term in Science we are learning about different types of materials. We have been looking at what different things are made of in our environment.

The year one children had to classify a variety of objects into categories of natural, man made or not sure. Below are some photos of our findings.

The children who were selected had to explain their reasoning as to why they thought a material belonged in that hoop.

We then went on an exploration to our food garden to find natural and man made materials. We had a lot of fun finding some different things. We even had some questions about things we weren't sure of.

We had a sneak peek at our broad beans that we planted last term, they are growing really well.

After our exploration we came back to the class and drew a labelled diagram of our food garden and labelled the man made and natural items we noticed.

We had a wonderful time being scientists!

Year One Possum Magic Party!

Good evening parents,

Next Thursday the 6th of August, the Year One children will be holding a Possum Magic party featuring all the food that Hush and Grandma Poss ate on their journey around Australia!

The children have loved reading Possum Magic over the last week and we have learnt about many of the Australian foods and cities that were included in the book.

The children and I would really appreciate if you were able to help bring our party to life by bringing in a selection of food from the book. This includes:
- Anzac Biscuits
- Minties and Tuna Mornay (maybe a tuna dip instead of a mornay)
- Steak and salad (could be roast beef and salad sandwiches?)
- Pumpkin scones (with butter or jam and cream)
- Vegemite sandwiches
- Mini pavlovas (or meringues)

...and the children will be making mini laminations on the day with Mrs. Keast!

A food roster will go out the front of the classroom tomorrow morning so please put your name down under one of the foods to indicate what you would like to bring. Please note, that we will only need a small plate of food as we have 32 gorgeous children in our class!

This will be a shared lunch so the children WILL NOT need lunch for that day. They will still need Sip and crunch and recess.

The children were very excited to have this celebration and I said that they were allowed to wear clothes that were similar colours to the ones in possum magic (grey, black and white) or even an Australiana shirt! Grandma Poss might even make an appearance!

We will be making possum magic masks so tails and whiskers for the day are encouraged!

If you have any questions or queries please don't hesitate to email me.

Welcome back to Term 3

Good evening lovely parents and welcome to Term 3!

The year has absolutely flown! I was so excited to see the children back today and I can see that the motivation to learn has continued to grow!

I have loved seeing some of the children's writing from their holidays and it sounds like all the families had a wonderful and relaxing time.

Sight Words
Mrs. Keast and myself are in the process of retesting all the children over the next few weeks and the focus this term is on both the reading AND spelling of the sight words. We are going to be quite thorough in this process and in order to receive the next set, the children need to be able to spell them as I am noticing that some children are having trouble applying sight words into their writing. A way you can help at home is to call out the sight words for your children to write down. This can be in a exercise book or on a scrap piece of paper as a way to build their understanding.

Reading
New reading records have been made for the children for the remainder of the year and I thank all the parents for their diligence when filling out the comments section In using the reading records, both Mrs. Keast and myself would really appreciate any feedback you might have about the book your child reads. This could be a simple sentence such as: great reading tonight, found this book a bit difficult or read this book with ease. This provides Mrs. Keast and myself with a reference to see if your child needs to be retested or if we need to adjust their reading level.

Writing/ Punctuation activities
An area that we have been learning in class both last term and this term is a focus on capital letters and full stops. I have been encouraging all the children to try and apply these in their writing and a way that they can practise this is through the activity Roy the Zebra. It allows children to identify the full stops and capital letters within a sentence in a fun and interactive way. Please click on the link below if you would like to play the game with your child.

Mathematics
Over the next couple of weeks, we are learning about money. Most of the children have had experience with money and they have enjoyed going to the canteen and using their silver and gold coins to buy things. Today we looked at the different pictures on the coins and we ordered the coins according to their amounts. We found out that although the 50c coin is the biggest, it doesn't mean it holds the biggest value. The children had lots of fun with this Australian Coins video and enjoyed the voices and the little rap each coin did. If you would like to watch the video, please click on the link below.

As a class rewards system I will be giving the children play money if they are seen doing the right thing and at the end of the two weeks, they are going to be able to buy something from the 'shop' (only stationary based items).

If you have any questions or queries, please email me.

Thank you for your support

Good afternoon parents,

This is just a reminder that it will be free dress tomorrow for Catholic Day. The children may wear whatever they would like and need to bring a gold coin donation.

Unfortunately I won't be here for the first two days of 3rd Term as I will be attending a wedding overseas, but Mrs. Alison Martin will be taking the class for me.

Thanks you again ....and only1 more day to go!
