Checklist:
- Towel, hat (wide brimmed), lunch and drinks will be needed by all students.
- No swimming apparatus apart from safety approved buoyancy vests to be taken.
- Students are asked to be ‘sun-screened’ before leaving home. Sunscreen will be provided for the students to re-apply throughout the day.
- Bring lunch and recess snack as usual.
- Must have a water bottle.
- Must wear a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in (won’t be allowed in water without this).
- Children may wear free dress.
- If you haven’t completed a Permission note, please complete and return to your child’s teacher ASAP.
- Beach Permission Note: - Must be returned to teacher prior or your child will not be entering the water at Old Dunsborough Beach on Thursday 10thDecember 2015.

Christmas Concert on Monday and Beach day Thursday!
Dear Parents,
We are almost in our last week of Year One! I can't believe it. Just a few quick reminders about next week...
Monday is our final Christmas concert for the year when the whole school come together and sing Christmas songs and celebrate the wonderful year we have had! We are also presenting this year's book awards for Citizenship and this year our subject focus was Maths. We would love to see everyone there to celebrate this wonderful OLC tradition.
The children are required to:
- Arrive at 5.15 to get into our class clusters for a 5.30pm start.
- Wear Christmas coloured clothes or dress up in any sort of Christmas outfit you would like.
- Maybe have something to eat before the concert as it may go into dinner time.
I am so excited for you all to see the beautiful children sing on Monday and I can tell you they have been outstanding in their practices!
Beach Day Thursday
Due to the constant shark sightings, the beach day for the whole school has been rescheduled to Thursday the 11th of December at the Dunsborough boat ramp. There was a pink note that went home with children yesterday however if you did not receive one or it has gone missing, please come and see me for another one as I need these back by Monday the 8th December. A few requirements for the beach day:
- Towels, hats lunch and drinks will be needed by the students.
- No swimming apparatus apart form safety approved buoyancy vests are to be taken.
- Students are asked to be 'sun screened' before leaving home. Sun screen will be available for the children to reapply throughout the day.
- Students will have lunch at 12.00 noon and return to school at approximately 12.45pm.

Last week for Reading books
Good afternoon parents,
As we are nearing the end of the year, Mrs. Kemp from the library has asked that all reading books be returned by this Friday the 4th of December. We would really appreciate if you have any reading books that might be floating around your house to please be returned as soon as possible as we have some outstanding loans against people's names.
Reading Eggs or Raz Kids should be used instead of home readers as they have levelled texts and activities appropriate to your children's reading level.

Welcome to Reading Eggs!
Good evening parents,
You may have heard from your child that we have begun using reading eggs in class! We are very lucky to have an early subscription that will follow on into next year so we can utilise this wonderful program for the rest of the term and over the holidays. The reading eggs program is a wonderful online reading program that focuses on phonics and helping your child to be a more confident reader. The Reading Eggs program is both motivational and fun way for children to get excited about reading.
Each child has been given a login which is glued into their reading record book so they can access the program at home. Each child has or will do a reading placement test at school. This will place them in the correct map and reading level within the program. I am able to login as a teacher and check the progress of each of the students as they complete their allocated lessons. The children can read books, complete lessons and create and change their avatar (which is often the first thing they like to do).
The program is meant to become part of the children's homework routine for the rest of the term and into next year. A maximum of 15 minutes three times a week would be a great starting point to use the program. For the more competent readers who finish all the lessons in the Reading Eggs program there is Reading Eggspress which is an add on to help children develop comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing skills. This is a wonderful gateway to tie into what is being taught in the classroom.

We design the new Year One classroom!
In Geography we have been learning about space and how we can change and modify a space for different purposes. The children of Orange Room have been very lucky to have the task of designing the new Year One classroom! The children were given a map of the new classroom and then they had to design and rearrange selected furniture to best suit that particular room space.
The children got into pairs and began to plan their rooms. There were some very creative responses of what should go in the new classroom like a pet area, a fish tank for Piranahs and even a sleeping area (I liked the idea of this one). We sat down and went through the criteria of what each design had to have.
- Make sure there is enough space between each cluster of desks
- Leave a gap around the door and window areas
- If they decided to add any furniture it had to be in proportion to the other furniture (eg. A couch could not be smaller than a desk)
They were excited to get started and used their maps to get started. They had to first lay out the furniture they wanted to put in the classroom and then once they had discussed it and were happy with the placement, they could glue it down. We had some very creative designs and there was a lot of important discussion between the partners which was very pleasing to see!
There were smiles and laughing and some wonderful teamwork to create the perfect classroom! Stay tuned for the finished product next week!

Visit from Saffi and Kobe's Mimi.....all the way from China!
Sorry this is a bit late!
Last Thursday We were very lucky to have Sue Nicholls (Kobe and Saffi's grandmother) come in to talk to the children about her time in China and to talk about Chinese New Year. The children were amazed to hear about where Sue lived in China and how the children in China had to do many hours of homework after school (something that they were not too keen on).
Sue was also very kind to bring is some beautiful picture books, puppets, Chinese clothing and some money envelopes that she used to give out on Chinese New Year.
Kobe and Saffi were very good at helping Sue show the children the different things and the children loved hearing about the story of Nian - a Chinese dragon who came to the villages in China.
Thank you Sue for coming in and showing the children all the beautiful things from China! We had a great time!

Curtin Teaching Awards
Good evening parents,
Thank you for all you kind and caring emails and conversations of support, I definitely felt the love heading up to Perth on Friday! I managed to get to the Gala and got to meet some of the amazing finalists in the night - there are some truly inspiring people in our state!
I was very honoured going up on stage to receive my finalist award and felt very proud to represent Our Lady of the Cape and all of the beautiful people in our little community! It was a wonderful night I got to spend with my parents and partner Hugh and wished all who had nominated could have been there with me! It was Dr Sharon Ross - an amazing and inspiring woman that took out the big award but I felt so privileged to be apart of these special group of teachers!
Thank you all so very much for everything, it was an amazing experience that I will not forget! A special mention to Rohan Hayhow and Gemma Sorgiovanni for organising the nomination!

Raz Kids and Wednesday Running Record Day
Good evening parents,
I have recently logged onto Raz kids and updated all of the children's reading levels in relation to their last Running Record I completed with them. I would really appreciate if you were able to log in with your child and allow them to read some of the books. This will prepare them for the Running Record day I will be having out of class which will allow me to test the children and give an accurate reading level for both reports and for handing over to the Year Two teacher.
The children can either read the books or can have the books read to them but I would ask you to encourage the children to read the children (which will help with their fluency) and complete the quiz on Raz kids to check for comprehension.
On Wednesday 11th of November, I will be at school but not in the classroom. This day was set aside for myself to gather data on the children's reading abilities which will be included in the children's report. Ms. Simone Clues will be in class to replace me however, I will still be around the school if needed.
If you are not going to be here on this day, please let me know via email so I can make other arrangements to test your child.

Curtin Teaching Awards
Just a quick note to say thank you again for all of your nomination letters towards the Curtin Teaching Awards which is on tonight! I will be leaving at lunchtime to get up for the big event so Ms. Clues will be in class from 1.30pm-3.05pm.

A fraction too much fun!
In class we have been learning about fractions. We have learnt about both halves and quarters and how we can make these using strips of paper, round circle and squares.
We found out that if we cut a strip of paper in half, we get two equal pieces and if we cut a strip of paper into quarters we get four equal pieces! We experimented with different shapes through the mathletics program and found that if you shade some parts of shape, you can make fractions like 3/4, 1/4 and even 4/4 which equals a whole!
We thought we would put our fraction knowledge to the test and make some delicious fraction fairy bread! With the help of Mrs. Hughes, we had to decide whether we would cut our bread into halves or quarters. We then had a variety of coloured sprinkles to choose from and we had to record what fraction was a particular colour.
We had some great designs! Some of the children even worked out that if you had 2/4 the same colour, it is exactly the same as a half.
The children had a wonderful time creating their fairy bread fractions!

Boardies Day Tomorrow

Board Bean Picking in the Food Garden!
Today the Year One students participated in the final activity of our OLC Food Garden. We were very excited to see how our little seeds had transformed into HUGE broad bean plants that now had their own pods hanging off them!
As a class, we looked at the broad bean life cycle and ordered some pictures to reflect on what our seeds started as and how over the months they have grown to now give us seeds for planting in next years crop! Mrs. Van Es and Mrs. Kerr had some wonderful facts about broad beans and how they are one of the oldest plants in the world! We were amazed!
We divided ourselves into two groups - one team to pick the beans from the plants and another to split the beans to get the beans from the pods.
The children were so engaged in picking the produce that they had grown themselves! Cooper showed us how to split the beans as he had done it on his Nona's farm before.
We found some very big beans...almost as big as Jye's head!
We found a few slimy friends in our garden too!
The children loved opening the beans and counting how many beans they had inside. We found one with seven beans inside!
After we picked all the beans from our plants, we went back inside and had a taste of the broad beans...some people even had some for their sip and crunch!
To follow on from our bean activity - we integrated this into our literacy session by creating a packet of 'magic' beans just like the beans from Jack and the Beanstalk. The children loved designing their packet, they began engaging in conversation about where their magic beans would lead to! It was a great link to our study of fairy tales!
We found out some wonderful facts about how to care for our broad beans below:

Spaghetti Science!
This term in Science we are learning about materials and how different objects can be physically changed through actions such as bending, stretching and twisting. Today we investigated the material properties of something that was slimy, sticky, bendy, curly and squishy! It was...... cooked spaghetti!
This related to the Year One Chemical Science outcome of:
Everyday materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways (ACSSU018)
The children were very excited for their investigation about the properties of spaghetti.
We introduced the investigation with a song by Peter Combe - Spaghetti Bolognese (one of my favourites as a child!) and the children got to see how the spaghetti was cooked.
We then got Hannah and Toby to come up the front and using their senses, describe the spaghetti for the class. We came up with some wonderful adjectives to describe our spaghetti!
After all of the children had seen how the spaghetti changed, we then decided to integrate our Art and Science skills together to make a spaghetti hair picture!
Along with our picture, the children had to complete a labelled diagram to show their understanding.
The children loved drawing pictures of themselves and then manipulating the bendy, curly, stretchy, slippery spaghetti to finish off their master piece! The children found out later the the spaghetti didn't need any glue to make it stick to their pictures because the materials that it was made of, stuck to the page!
We loved getting our hands dirty in Science!

The children were very excited for their investigation about the properties of spaghetti.
We introduced the investigation with a song by Peter Combe - Spaghetti Bolognese (one of my favourites as a child!) and the children got to see how the spaghetti was cooked.

Sports Carnival for 2015
On Thursday 24th of September, OLC had it's annual sports carnival. When the children arrived at school, they were ready to run - some fancy face paint made for a great start to our day.
It was a wonderful day with the sun shining down on us just as we started heading down to the oval.
The Year One's were so excited and could not contain our excitement as we went into our faction bays.
We participated in a variety of team games and worked well with the Year Two's to compete for the winning first sticker! I think the face paint made the children run extra fast!
They looked wonderful in their faction shirts and I could see a few lollies being handed out by the faction captains for the best cheering people!
Well done to our runner up champion boy Cooper and our joint champion boys Banjo and Remy!
Also to our runner up champion girls Hannah and Ella and our champion girls Ruby and Saffi!
It was a fantastic day at the sports carnival!
